As a kid, I was a competitive gymnast. From age 10 – 18, I trained in gymnastics 20hrs a week. When I was 17, I injured my knee during a warm up tumbling pass – I tore my ACL and meniscus. I ended up having to have a full ACL replacement. After 3 months of waiting for surgery and 6 months of physical therapy and rehab, I was released back to full workload in gymnastics. Unfortunately, I had lost too much progress and made the painful decision to retire from my sport. I coached gymnastics for multiple years afterwards, so I have 12 years total experience in the sport.
Over the next few years, I gained a lot of weight…peaking at over 200lbs, which is a LOT for my 5’4” frame. I was miserable, uncomfortable and felt hopeless. Every attempt at “getting back in shape” failed because no program I created for myself had the intensity, challenge and competitiveness I needed and I quickly got bored and discouraged. Every attempt at “eating healthy” also failed because I had no idea how to eat for fuel and fad diets and extreme caloric deficits aren’t sustainable.
In 2010, I enlisted with the United States Army. During Basic Training, I lost a significant amount of weight, but upon completing training and returning home, I slipped back into the same rut I had been in before, regaining a significant portion of what I had lost, even while still being in the military.
In February 2017, one of my coworkers finally convinced me to give CrossFit a shot. On my first day, I didn’t even know what a deadlift was and had never even touched a barbell before. One class and I was instantly hooked. I went from being brand new to coming 5 days a week. CrossFit was exactly what I needed – challenging, physically and mentally demanding, competitive and dynamic enough to always have new goals to work towards.
I have now been a member at CrossFit Envy for 18 months, have competed in two local competitions and am a participant in the competitors program. Since I began training at CrossFit Envy, I have lost around 12% body fat, 10% of that in just the first 12 months alone. I have gotten stronger, learned how to manage my nutrition and gained a passion for fitness that I never had before.
CrossFit saved my life. I am now in the best shape I have ever been in, physically, mentally and emotionally. I want everyone to experience the transformation that I have and I am so thankful for the opportunity to instill some of my passion into the athletes here at CrossFit Envy.
